suppressed the news of the outbreak for at least two days. Both the London Daily Herald and Populaire, leading French Socialist daily, declared that the massacre began on August 2.

The London Times and other papers ridiculed the story that a drunken Jewish soldier in a French zouave regiment was the cause of the riot and said that the pogrom obviously followed a deliberate plan.
