Protests against the increase in anti-Jewish incitement and against the daily baiting of Jews on the streets of the Free City, failed today when Dr. Greiser, Nazi vice president of the Danzig Senate, gave a noncommittal answer to a Jewish delegation which conferred with him.
The Jewish delegation protested vigorously singing of the “Horst Wessel Song” and the habit of Danzig Nazis who shout insulting remarks, such as “hang the Jews.”
Since the withdrawal of Dr. Herman Rauschning, president of the Senate, from active participation in government affairs, conditions in Danzig have become progressively worse for the Jews. Dr. Rauschning, who took an indefinite leave of absence, was an advocate of a moderate policy.
In recent weeks the “Aryan paragraph” has been strictly applied in Danzig, and Jewish professionals are being severely discriminated against. Jewish artisans groups have been refused government recognition and the libraries of the city have been cleansed of all books by Jewish authors.
A committee of Danzig Jewish artisans went to Warsaw recently to ask for help for outside Jewish organizations. They stated that there had been a tremendous increase in anti-Semitism in Danzig.
