A wholesale boycott of Jewish merchants by the state-maintained municipal chain of low-priced restaurants is in progress here, officials of the chain making it a point of refusing to buy from Jews even if they offer lower prices than their Gentile competitors, Neue Welt, Jewish newspaper, reported today.

Charging that officials of the “WOEK” not only conduct the movement, but actually permit widespread agitation for an anti-Jewish boycott with full knowledge of the government, Neue Welt publishes letters from a number of Jewish merchants attesting to the open anti-Jewish boycott.

“WOEK” is a semi-state institution which daily feeds tens of thousands of officials and employees of the municipality and the government.

Jewish circles point out the inconsistency of the government and the municipality, which tolerate an outright anti-Jewish boycott, but at the same time continue to issue denials that there is any official anti-Semitism in Austria.

Recently Viennese anti-Semites distributed lists of merchants on every street, marking the names of Jewish tradesmen and urging the population to refrain from buying in Jewish shops. The name of the printer of the leaflets was given, but no action was taken by officials.
