Dr. Ruelf Denies Overtures to Goebbels

Denial of reports that he had talked over the question of Jews joining the German Front in the Saar with an emissary of Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels was made to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency by Dr. Ruelf, former rabbi of the Jewish communities of Saarbruecken, who is on his way to Palestine.

“I never discussed the question of Jews joining the German Front under any conditions whatever,” Dr. Ruelf said. “Dr. Koenig (the emissary) only asked me to formulate the wishes of the Saar Jews. I replied that our position was an obvious one.

“We demand the maintenance of our unrestricted equality of rights. A promise to this effect would, however, have meaning only if equality of rights of the German Jews would be restored. Dr. Koenig promised to negotiate in Berlin on this basis.

“I prophesied to him that his efforts would be futile. And I have proved to have been right. Dr. Koenig did not come again to me. These are the facts, and all other statements on the subject are not correct.”
