Word from London is that the grand old lady who was the original of G. B. Stern’s famous character, the matriarch, actually had just such a journey as is described in the new Matriarch novel, “Shining and Free.”

According to the Sunday Times, the old lady, who died three years ago, made an expedition to Bournemouth very similar to the journey to Brighton described in the novel.
