President Roosevelt has been selected for the tenth award of the Richard J.H. Gottheil Medal for Distinguished Service to Jewry of the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, according to an announcement to be read Saturday night at Founders Day banquets of the fraternity in forty cities.
Harold Riegelman, past president of the order, in an address prepared for delivery at the key dinner in New York, said:
“When the chief executive of the greatest of democracies, in such times as these, repeatedly and unmistakably affirms the right of free thought, free speech, free worship and repeatedly and unmistakably denounces intolerance and bigotry in all places and in all forms, a great service is rendered all humanity. Of this service Jewry is the first but not the last or only beneficiary.”
The President was chosen for the award on the basis of a poll of a jury of American newspaper editors, none of them members of the fraternity.
