GEORGE GERSHWIN, YOUTHFUL MASTER OF JAZZ COMPOSITIONS WHOSE “RHAPSODY IN BLUE” CATAPULTED HIM TO WORLD FAME, DIED YESTERDAY FOLLOWING A BRAIN TUMOR OPERATION. HE WAS 38 YEARS OLD.

THE YOUNG COMPOSER, HAILED BY SUCH MUSIC CRITICS AS OLIN DOWNES FOR ACHIEVEMENT THAT “WILL MAKE HIM LIVE LONG IN THE RECORD OF AMERICAN MUSIC,” COLLAPSED TWO WEEKS AGO WHILE WORKING ON NINE COMPOSITIONS FOR A NEW PICTURE, “THE GOLDWYN FOLLIES.”
