The high official who spoke to newspaper correspondents, when asked whether it was correct to interpret the establishment of the new race department as an indication that the government intends to emulate Germany and issue anti-Jewish legislation, replied that the race department was not new, and had existed for many years, dealing chiefly with physical and health problems of the nation, but admitted that “now, however, the scope will be extended to deal also with Jews.”

Asked about the functions of the department regarding Jews, the official said it was too early to predict the exact functions, which, he declared, would be defined in the first issue of the new racial publication which will appear in august.

Il Tevere, anti-Semitic newspaper, published a two-page article under the heading, “Jews Incite Democratic Countries against Dictatorships.” The article attacked Secretary of State Cordell Hull and denounced democracy as “the religion of the Jews.” It also condemned manifestations of friendship among the United States, Great Britain and France.
