The Hias-Ica Emigration Association today reported that a Rescue Board has been established in Turkey to facilitate rescuing Jews from Hungary and the Balkan countries and arranging their transportation to Palestine and other overseas havens. The Board is composed of two members of the Jewish Agency for Palestine and of one member from the War Refugee Board, the Joint Distribution Committee and the Hias-Ica Emigration Association.
Dr. James Bernstein, European director of the Hias-Ica, today informed the headquarters of his organization here by cable from Lisbon that the Hungarian Legation in Portugal received a message from its government in Budapest containing the following information:
1) Responding to an appeal from the Swedish Government, the government of Hungary agreed to permit the emigration to Sweden or Palestine of Jews who have relatives living in Sweden, or who have business connections there.
2) In reply to a British appeal made through the Swiss Government, the government of Hungary has agreed to renew the exit visas of Jews possessing valid Palestine visas.
3) Responding to an appeal by the War Refugee Board by way of Switzerland, the Hungarian Government agreed to admit assistance by the International Red Cross for Jews in camps or ghettos in Hungary and to permit the emigration of Jewish children under ten years of age.
Dr. Bernstein also reported that the Hungarian Legation in Lisbon has been notified by its government that while the above measures are being carried out, further deportations of Jews from Hungary have been suspended.
