Israel-bound Jewish Dp’s Will Be out of Europe Within Nine Months, Haber Says

All displaced Jews who desire to immigrate to Israel will be out of the European DP camps by next August or September, Prof. William Haber, tiring advisor on Jewish affairs to the American military command in Europe, declared here today. Haber, who is returning to his post as Professor of Economics at University of Michigan, spoke at a farewell luncheon in his honor.

He asserted that after next September the only Jewish DP’a left in the camps Germany and Austria will be those who desire to go to countries other than Israel. revealed that although 1,600 Jews left Austria last December, there are still some ,500 in the country, 70 percent of whom wish to go to Israel. He estimated that ?me 45,000 of 80,000 displaced Jews still in German camps will also go to Israel.

Kurt Levin, Israeli representative here, who was another speaker at the lunch-##, paid tribute to the U.S. Army’s role in the current movement of DP’s and expressed his government’s thanks to it. The representatives of several local Jewish organizations praised the “humanitarian role” of the American Army which, they said, aided some 200,000 Jewish refugees who crossed Austria since the downfall of ?zism. Representatives of the Army and the Austrian Government were present at the affair.
