Major Salah Salem’s suggestion that the price of Egypt’s alignment with the West is Israel’s relinquishing of the Negev, was termed here today an “ill-timed trial balloon which could not do Egypt any good.”

Diplomatic observers here read of Major Salem’s statement with a feeling that the Egyptian Cabinet member has now said out loud exactly what Israel may charge against Egypt when Israel’s representative Abba S. Eban addresses the scheduled Security Council meeting this week. Officially neither the American nor the British delegations would make-any comment on Major Salem’s suggestions.
