Rep. Eugene Siler, Kentucky Republican, today introduced in the House an amendment to the Constitution to recognize the “law and authority” of Jesus Christ.

The proposed new amendment is identical with one introduced last year by Republican Sen Ralph E. Flanders of Vermont. Hearings were held on the Flanders amendment with Jewish organizations protesting against it on the grounds that it violated traditional American respect for the separation of church from state and would create a category of second class citizens. The Flanders measure was shelved last year at the conclusion of Senate hearings.
