Dr. Jonas Salk was presented with a $10,000 check and a gold medal here yesterday at the American Medical Association’s annual convention. The check and the medal constituted the Criss Award, an annual prize given by Mutual of Omaha, an insurance company, for contributions in public health.
The presentation was made by Dr. Elmer Hess, president-elect of the AMA, who advised the discoverer of the anti-polio vaccine to keep the check for himself. Dr. Salk has turned over to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis all monetary awards which have been presented to him in gratitude for his vaccine work.
