Mrs. Betty Robbins, 31, has been named cantor of Temple Avodah, a Reform synagogue in this Long Island suburban community. The vote of the trustees of the congregation, which serves 200 families, was unanimous, it was announced last night.
Mrs. Robbins, believed to be the first woman ever named a cantor, has sung in synagogue choirs since her youth when she sang in a German Jewish synagogue in Danzig. Later, with her family, she fled to Australia where, during World War II, she met and married Sheldon Robbins, than an American serviceman. She has been singing the soprano role with the Temple Avodah choir since it was organized three years ago. She will commence her duties as cantor with the Rosh Hashanah services in September.
