The Council of Christians and Jews here named a special committee today to probe charges that many of England’s leading “public” schools–private institutions–implement an unofficial numerous clauses, restricting or discouraging entirely the enrollment of Jews as students.
The charges were made public today by the Evening Standard which alleges that St. Paul’s School, in London, restricts Jewish enrollment to 15 percent. This is done, the newspaper declares, in spite of the fact that some very prominent Jews are among the school’s alumni. Among these are publisher Victor Gollancz, Lord Nathan and Sir Isaiah Berlin.
Two other well-known “public” schools, High Gate and Mill Hill, are accused of having set a quota of 10 percent for Jewish student enrollment. Other schools, says the Evening Standard, “effectively” discourage Jewish enrollment by making it clear that all students-must attend chapel services, participate in Christian prayers, and take lessons in Christian Scripture.
