“Israel is ready to agree to complete disarmament if her Arab neighbors will do likewise but with mutual controls, naturally. “Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister told a dinner-meeting here last night attended by 1,500 guests. She spoke as a guest of the Israel Bond Organization in Montreal and was introduced by Yaacov Herzog, Israel’s Ambassador to Canada.
She said arms, tanks and submarines were being sent to Egypt and that this build-up was dangerous to the security of Israel. Disarmament was especially important for Middle East countries because, as underdeveloped countries, they could not afford to engage in arms races, she stated.
She told the dinner guests that the day would come when Israel and its Arab neighbors “will sit down together but how long it will take I don’t know. I believe that the day of peace will come because it is the only logical thing. I believe this just as I believe the day will come when there will no longer be war in the world.”
The importance of Israel Bond dollars to the economy of Israel cannot be overemphasized, Mrs. Meir declared. “These dollars are building our roads, our pipelines, our natural resources, homes for the immigrants and are playing a major role in developing our industry,” she stressed.
