Chancellor Willy Brandt promised today the German Jewish community that his government would “continue to promote respect and tolerance” towards all citizens and religious groups so that the crimes of the past would not be repeated. The statement was part of a message sent to the president of the Jewish community of Munich, Dr. Hans Lamm, on the occasion of the laying of the cornerstone for a new Jewish community center which is being built there. Jewish circles in this capital greeted the Chancellor’s message, which coincided with his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize award, with satisfaction as a sign of the continued harmony which reigns between the West German government and its Jewish citizens.
