Transvaal judges and members of the Johannesburg Bar paid tribute at a special court session to Harold Hanson, Q.C., a leading South African barrister, and former vice-president of the South African Zionist Federation, who died here at the age of 68. Justice Cillie, Judge-President of the Transvaal, said. Mr. Hanson had been a powerful and distinguished advocate who would be missed in legal circles.
Born in Johannesburg, Mr. Hanson was the son of a Rand Jewish pioneer. He was the chief counsel in many notable cases and was known for his strongly held liberal views and championship of civil liberties. For years he played a distinguished part in Jewish communal life, and served on the Executive Council of the Jewish Board of Deputies as well as in leading offices on the Zionist Federation. He died last weekend.
