NEW YORK (Jun. 9)
Members of the Israeli Diplomatic Corps and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in North America recently began to offer their assistance in promoting aliya, according to Yehiel Leket, director of the Israel Aliya Center in North America. This program has been designed to encompass a wide range of activities involving prospective new immigrants to Israel from across the United States and Canada.
Leket said that candidates for aliya are invited to special briefings on foreign policy and political affairs in Israel and receive information and material while in the United States. In addition, before candidates leave for permanent settlement in Israel, they receive a personal letter written by the Consul General of Israel in their area. Farewell parties for prospective new immigrants prior to their departure are organized every few months where noted officials and prominent members of the community participate.
Laket said that thus far the program was active in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Houston and Montreal. He praised the cooperation of the members of the Israeli Mission to the United Nations, including Ambassador Chaim Herzog and his deputy, Ambassador Pinchas Eliav.
