A leader of the Hamburg branch of the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD) has received a top spot on a new election list for the Hamburg state parliament. The list, which the NPD is trying to take over, according to the West German media, will campaign on the issue of stopping the flow of foreigners into the country. It is expected to gain at least one seat in the upcoming elections.

Public opinion is largely supportive of the measures it proposes, which include speeding the departure of foreigners already resident in West Germany, Most of them are laborers in low-paying jobs. Rightwing factions such as the NPD have been exploiting public sentiment against them.
