The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would require the Treasury and State departments to help American victims of state-sponsored terrorism collect damages awarded by U.S. courts. The bill’s language is intended to help the family of Alisa Flatow, an American Jewish student killed by a suicide bomber in the Gaza Strip in 1995, collect a $247.5 million judgment against Iran. The Clinton administration is opposing her family’s effort to seize frozen Iranian assets to collect the damages. Rep. Jim Saxton (R-N.J.) is sponsoring a similar measure in the House.
