Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak returned to Israel from the negotiating table to confront growing opposition to a withdrawal from the Golan Heights as part of any peace deal with Syria. Part of the opposition stemmed from the feeling among some Israelis that Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa remained cool toward Barak throughout a week of negotiations in West Virginia.
