Israel and Syria are close to a peace accord as a result of a series of secret contacts, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak told the Washington Post. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa have maintained the contacts during the past two months by using “special envoys” and American and British go-betweens, Mubarak said.
