The nominee for Syrian president said in a recent interview that Israel used security concerns as a pretext for not pressing ahead with peace talks. The comments of Bashar Assad, son of the late Syrian President Hafez Assad, were published in the Saudi daily Asharq al-Awsat. Meanwhile, Bashar reportedly told President Clinton by telephone that Syria would pull its troops out of Lebanon only if asked to do so by the Lebanese government.
