British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Middle East envoy lost a legal battle to prevent a British newspaper from revealing details of his income tax returns. The Sunday Times reported that Lord Levy paid just over $8,000 in taxes for the 1998-99 financial year, the amount he would have owed if he had earned the average national salary. Levy said that he “was not gainfully employed” during the period and was living off his savings. The newspaper was careful to avoid accusing him of any wrongdoing.
