The body that oversees the religious needs of France’s Jewish community has seen its revenues dwindle as a result of fears of mad cow disease. The Consistoire, which collects a levy on meat sold by kosher butchers, stands to lose about $2.8 million next year if observant Jews continue to shun meat, as many French consumers now do.
