The French government submitted a bill to ban religious insignia in state schools. Education Minister Luc Ferry said Wednesday that he had presented legislation to ban all conspicuous religious signs, beginning in the next school year. Muslim groups in France and other parts of the world have expressed vigorous opposition to the legislation, but Jewish groups largely have supported it.
