Police in Brooklyn are looking for vandals who painted swastikas on numerous cars in the Midwood area early Friday, apparently from a moving vehicle. The swastikas were painted on the street-side of the vehicles, said Chaim Deutsch, president of the Flatbush Shomrim Volunteer Security Patrol. That, he said, indicated that the vandals were likely riding in a car.

Midwood has one of the highest concentrations of Orthodox Jews in the city. Deutsch said residents of a block on East 24th Street near Avenue J, where the majority of damage was incurred, did not see the swastikas when they attended synagogue services at about 5 a.m. The first report came about an hour later.

"The police are checking security cameras from homes in the area to see if they caught anything," said Deutsch. After examining the vandalism, the area’s city councilman, Michael Nelson, said he was optimistic the culprits would be caught, noting arrests in several similar recent cases.

"Hopefully this guy will brag to someone, and there will be a reward, and weíll bring another nut job to justice," said Nelson.
