Rabbi Yedidia Shofet, spiritual leader of the Jewish community in Iran and later Los Angeles, died last Friday at age 96. Known among Iranians of all faiths, Shofet bore the honorary title of chief rabbi and was the Iranian Jewish community’s liaison to the shah and later to Ayatollah Khomeini.
Michigan and Nebraska declared Oct. 5 as Raoul Wallenberg Day. The proclamation comes after a campaign by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation. The day, which already is celebrated in New York, commemorates the Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Jews in Hungary during the Holocaust.
