BRUSSELS, July 9 (JTA) — Twenty-five students in Brussels held their breath to protest what they see as the international community’s passivity on Darfur, in one of several related protest events. A campaign of violence in Sudan has led to an estimated 200,000 deaths and a humanitarian crisis in the region. The June 29 protest was jointly organized by the European Union of Jewish Students and a Rwandan student group; participants included European Jews, Rwandans and Sudanese. The demonstration followed a visit to Rwanda in April by a group of Jewish students, most from Europe. Other protests were scheduled to take place at the same time in New York, Albuquerque, N.M., Washington, Los Angeles and Kigali, Rwanda. Go to holdyourbreathfordarfur.com for more information.
