Polish rescuer nominated for Nobel

A 96-year-old Polish woman who saved Jewish children from the Holocaust was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Irene Sendler saved some 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto by convincing their parents to let her arrange adoptions with Polish families. The Norwegian Nobel Committee will decide who among the 181 nominees gets the prize, to be announced in October. According to Reuters, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Polish President Lech Kaczynski are supporting Sendler’s nomination in an online petition.
