British Jewish government official resigns

In a surprise move, a prominent Jewish member of the British
government resigned.

Attorney-General Lord Goldsmith was widely expected to be dismissed after Gordon
Brown’s takeover as prime minister on Wednesday, and the resignation is being
seen as a pre-emptive move.

Brown was expected to remove Goldsmith as part of the
restructuring of the Crown Prosecution Service so that no ministerial members
would be part of the investigation of Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Labor cohorts
in a scandal involving the bestowing of peerages, or lordships, to significant
donors.

The anticipated house-cleaning moves comprise Brown’s
attempt to distance his new government from the Blair administration and the “cash for honors” scandal.
