Polish Jewish museum breaks ground

Polish President Lech Kaczynski used the groundbreaking for Europe’s largest Jewish museum to promote Jewish-Polish solidarity.The Museum of the History of Polish Jews should “forge deeper reconciliation between Jewish and non-Jewish Poles as they remember their common history” Kaczynski said Tuesday at the museum’s groundbreaking ceremony.Israeli Ambassador David Peleg and Tel Aviv’s chief rabbi, Meir Lau, were among those at the ceremony for the museum, a planned 2,000-square-foot structure slated to open in 2009.In his last post as mayor of Warsaw, Kaczynski was a key supporter of the museum, donating the land for it next to the Monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto.The museum is being touted by Jewish leaders and Poles as a way of focusing on the millennium of Jewish life in Poland, not just the Holocaust.
