The city of Netanya banned the sale of pork.
The Israeli coastal city north of Tel Aviv passed an ordinance this week requiring dozens of shops selling pork in the city center to relocate to industrial zones. The law was enacted by a City Council vote of 12-3, but could be overturned on appeal.
Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that zoning laws for non-kosher eateries or markets can be passed only after a census is taken to
determine the popularity of the businesses in question. Netanya is home to a large number of immigrants from the former Soviet
Union, many of whom are not religiously observant or Jewish.
