Israel’s tourism minister during the Lebanon war testified that the timing was fortuitous.
Isaac Herzog, in testimony to the Winograd Commission of inquiry into last year’s conflict with Hezbollah released Thursday, observed serious setbacks in the fight but said in retrospect, the war gave the armed forces a chance to test themselves. Herzog, who now holds the social affairs portfolio, also speculated that unchecked by Israel, Hezbollah may have acquired a more extensive arsenal and perhaps weapons of mass destruction.
“We were lucky that what happened, happened now because at the end of the day, who knows where we would have been three to four years hence,” he said.
