Israel to institute new wartime measures

The Israeli government is forming a crisis center for wartime.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened top Cabinet colleagues and security chiefs Wednesday to decide on a response to the findings of a commission of inquiry into last year’s Lebanon war.

Among the forum’s decisions was that a crisis center be set up to insulate and advise the prime minister and his military advisers during wartime.

The forum also decided to upgrade the status of the National Security Council, turning it into a full branch of the Prime Minister’s Office. The council, which has been sidelined in previous Israeli administrations, will now be entrusted with preparing position papers for the prime minister to draw on during national emergencies.
