E.U. resumes Gaza fuel funding

The European Union and Hamas settled a funding dispute that had led to power outages in the Gaza Strip.

The European Union announced Tuesday it would resume subsidies for fuel imports to Gaza, having briefly suspended the payouts amid suspicions that Hamas officials were siphoning off funds for non-humanitarian purposes.

The dispute caused a slowdown in Gaza’s electricity generation, meaning power cut-offs for many of the territory’s 1.5 million Palestinians.

The European Union said the resumed funding would require oversight. Hamas has denied wrongdoing in the case and accused the rival West Bank administration under Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas of trying to turn the international community against it.
