An Orthodox Jewish detective is suing the Las Vegas police department for forcing him to shave and not wear a head covering.
The Nevada American Civil Liberties Union is assisting Steve Riback, 31, in the suit filed Aug. 29 in the U.S. District Court in Las Vegas.
Riback says he has suffered emotional damage for being forced to shave and wera no head covering for almost seven months. The suit notes that he before joining the department’s quality assurance section he worked undercover as a vice detective wearing a beard and a baseball cap.
A department lawyer would not comment to the Associated Press except to say that the department is a “paramilitary organization” that is “religion-neutral.”
