President Bush appointed five American Jews to positions on Holocaust preservation and remembrance commissions.
Bush named Marc Goldman, a New Jersey dairy magnate and a board member of the Republican Jewish Coalition, to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, which runs the museum on the national mall.
The president also named five members to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, which protects properties in Europe associated with the heritage of U.S. citizens. Four are Jewish, including two who were picked by Bush: William Daroff, the Washington director of United Jewish Communities and a former senior staffer for the Republican Jewish Coalition, and Lawrence Steinberg of Dallas, another member of the coalition’s leadership.
Two others were appointed on the recommendation of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives: Lee Seeman of Great Neck, N.Y., who is already serving on the commission and was instrumental in building a Holocaust memorial in Wyszkow, Poland, was reappointed; and Jules Fleischer, a liaison for Democratic state and city lawmakers to the Orthodox Jewish community in New York City’s Borough Park neighborhood.
