The United States has asked Israel to crack down on illegal imports of Iranian pistachio nuts.
Israeli Agriculture Minister Shalom Simhon said Wednesday he had received a request from Washington to boost scrutiny on pistachios imported from Turkey, which are believed to include nuts from Iran.
Simhon agreed, though it remained unclear how Israel, which imports $26 million worth of pistachios a year, is meant to determine the nuts’ provenance.
The United States is spearheading international efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear program through sanctions.
