The Palestinian affiliate to the International Committee of the Red Cross began operating in Jerusalem.

Five ambulances from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society have deployed in east Jerusalem as part of a 2005 deal with Israel’s Magen David Adom paramedic service, the ICRC announced over the weekend.

The memorandum of understanding between the Red Crescent and Magen David Adom paved the way for both to join the ICRC in 2006. The bilateral pact was designed to ensure Red Crescent ambulances can pass with relative freedom through Israeli security checkpoints and access Palestinian areas.

Israel, which annexed east Jerusalem as its capital, generally bars symbols of Palestinian sovereignty in the city.
