Jewish Dems rap Huckabee on immigration

Jewish Democrats blasted a Republican presidential candidate’s immigration plan for threatening dual U.S.-Israeli citizens.

Mike Huckabee’s plan would discourage dual citizenship, the National Jewish Democratic Council said.

The former Arkansas governor calls for the United States to inform foreign governments when their former citizens become naturalized U.S. citizens. His plan would impose civil and perhaps criminal penalties on American citizens who use their dual status to vote in elections in both countries.

The Jewish Democrats pointed out that this position ignores an important Supreme Court decision and would adversely impact Israelis who hold dual American citizenship.

With this position, the group said, Huckabee ignores the 1967 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Afroyim vs. Rusk that states that U.S. citizens do not lose their citizenship by voting in an Israeli election. Congress ratified that Supreme Court ruling in 1978.
