Israel may appoint a renowned Arab affairs journalist as its next ambassador to Egypt.
Ehud Ya’ari, a Channel Two television pundit who also has written for the Jerusalem Report, is a leading candidate to replace Israel’s ambassador to Egypt, Shalom Cohen, when he steps down next year, Yediot Acharonot reported Sunday.
According to the newspaper, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni turned down several veteran diplomats who were interested in the Cairo post, saying they lacked charisma. Israeli envoys in Egypt long have complained of getting a cold shoulder from Egypt, but Jerusalem invests great effort in maintaining ties with Egypt, the first Arab power to recognize the Jewish state.
Ya’ari, 62, had no immediate comment on the report.
