President Bush extended for another six months his waiver of a law banning a PLO presence in Washington.
The law, based on anti-terrorist legislation dating back to the 1980s, has been routinely waived since the launch of the Oslo peace process in 1993. Bush sent Congress the latest waiver on Wednesday.
The current Palestine Liberation Organization representative, Afif Safieh, is set to leave in May. The PLO represents Palestinian Authority interests in Washington. The Bush administration backs the current P.A. leadership as moderate and ready for peacemaking.
