Israeli diplomatic missions and other interests abroad are on high alert for fear of Hezbollah attacks.
Jerusalem sources said Thursday that, following the assassination of Hezbollah terror chief Imad Mughniyeh, security precautions at Israeli embassies, as well as other foreign interests of the Jewish state, had been boosted.
Israel’s military garrison on the Lebanese border has also been beefed up.
Hezbollah and Iran have accused Israel of being behind Mughniyeh’s killing in Damascus on Tuesday night, a charge denied by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office.
After Israeli helicopter gunships killed Hezbollah leader Abbas Musawi in southern Lebanon in 1992, Iranian agents retaliated by bombing the Israeli Embassy and a Jewish center in Argentina.
Jerusalem sources said the new security alert could be in place for weeks or even months given assessments that Hezbollah, still reeling from an Israeli offensive in Lebanon in 2006, would bide its time before launching a revenge strike.
