Vacant Providence temple firebombed

A teenager was charged with throwing a Molotov cocktail outside a vacant synagogue in Providence, R.I.

The teen, with two alleged accomplices, placed the incendiary device in front of the long-vacant Temple Beth-El early Wednesday when the boys were spotted by police, the Providence Journal reported.

A patrolman extinguished the fire. The intended target apparently was a vacant lot across the street from the temple, the newspaper reported.

The incident does not appear to be related to Saturday’s firebombing of the home of a Jewish Agency emissary in a nearby neighborhood, police told the Journal. That incident is still under city, state and federal investigation.

The teens, two aged 17 and one aged 15, are in custody in a juvenile facility until a hearing scheduled for Monday.
