The beneficiaries of a Jewish British philanthropist continue to mourn their benefactor’s death.
Real-estate magnate Benzion Dunner,45, was killed in a car accident March 22, two days after he gave nearly $4 million to thousands of members of the community with financial trouble who lined up at his London home to receive the annual Purim gifts.
“He called himself ‘God’s postman’ and said that he saw no point in having money just sitting in a bank account,” a family friend told The Independent. “Countless individuals and families depended on him to make sure they always had food on their tables. Communities people have never heard of came to him for help. He was the most amazing man – and he did it all with a smile on his face.”
Dunner was the grandson of Rabbi Josef Dunner, one of the last rabbis to be ordained in Nazi Germany and who served as chief rabbi in Konigsberg, East Prussia and who escaped to Britain in 1939.
More than 3,000 people attended Dunner’s funeral, including mourners from overseas. He is survived by his wife, Esther, and nine children.
