Nine men involved in a series of suicide bombings in Casablanca escaped from prison.

A Jewish community center and cemetery were among five sites hit on May 16, 2003 by a banned Islamist group linked to al-Qaida. The bombing, one of the deadliest in Moroccan history, killed 45.

Monday morning’s escape occurred at the beginning of a one-day hunger strike by about 1,000 Islamist inmates in prisons across Morocco.
