JDC, Komen fight breast cancer in Bosnia

A Jewish social service agency and a U.S.-based breast cancer awareness group are teaming to help treat breast disease in Bosnia.

The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which have partnered through the JDC’s Women’s Health Empowerment Program, announced the creation of the Society of Senology at a conference this week in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The conference convened more than 70 medical professionals, nongovernmental organization representatives, research scientists, breast cancer survivors and activists from throughout the former Yugoslavia.

The Society for Senology will help organize health professionals to create a multi-disciplinary approach to treating breast cancer in Bosnia, where half of the estimated 1,350 women diagnosed annually with the disease die.

The society also will push for creating a national breast cancer screening policy in Bosnia.

The JDC and the Komen organization have been working together to increase breast cancer awareness in Eastern Europe.
