In a first, Israel granted citizenship to the adopted child of a gay male couple.

The dual American-Israeli citizens adopted a boy in Cambodia in 2000 and have been petitioning for his adoption since, Ha’aretz reported on Friday. Two weeks ago, the Israeli attorney general’s office wrote the couple’s lawyer to say the boy, who had been converted to Judaism, has Israeli citizenship.

Israel has previously recognized lesbians as having parental rights to their partners’ birth children.
